Wind in the Synapses
Xavier Carrère and Gertrud Varailhon
The Xavier Carrère showroom in Magescq is hosting the exhibition "Du Vent dans les Synapses" (Wind in the Synapses), an artistic encounter between the sculptures of Xavier Carrère and the plant-based works of Gertrud Varailhon.
This exhibition explores the subtle links between matter, memory, movement, and perception. The works engage in a dialogue around the notions of transformation, resilience, and balance, inviting the visitor to a sensory experience where the strength of sculpture and the delicacy of plant life meet.

Xavier Carrère invites his long-time friend Gertrud Varailhon for an extraordinary exhibition in his Magescq showroom, July & August 2026

Getrud Varailhon
Visual artist
Born in February 1949 in Germany, Gertrud Varailhon first trained in design and jewelry in Pforzheim, a major German center for goldsmithing.
She continued her studies at the University of Applied Sciences, then at the Beaux-Arts de Montréal, Canada, in the mid-1970s. Settling in Hossegor at the end of the 1970s, she founded with her husband the Varailhon jewelry store, recognized for the quality and originality of its contemporary pieces.
For nearly thirty years, Gertrud Varailhon created unique jewelry pieces, composed of precious stones assembled into necklaces or bracelets with gold or platinum. The artist also pursued a more personal work in the visual arts.
His works have been exhibited notably at the Sporting-Casino in Hossegor, at the Villa Beatrix Enea in Anglet, at the Raymond Farbos art center in Mont-de-Marsan, at the Château d'Arcangues and also in Italy, at Lake Como.
True to her discreet nature, not inclined to grand speeches, she only reveals what she considers essential about her journey and prefers to let her works speak for themselves.

Recent work: Xavier Carrère exhibited in the VIP lounges of Biarritz airport
Xavier Carrère's works are currently on display in the VIP lounges of Biarritz airport.
This exhibition offers travelers a unique dialogue between contemporary art, light, and space. Through his sculptures in blown glass, bronze, steel, or concrete, the artist continues his exploration of essential forms, movement, and the silent presence of matter.
Installed in a passageway open to the ocean and the Basque territory, these works invite a contemplative experience where transparency, reflections and volumes resonate with the architecture and surrounding light.
This presentation is part of the continuity of Xavier Carrère's artistic journey, whose works have been exhibited in numerous art centers, galleries, museums and public spaces in France and internationally.
For several decades, Xavier Carrère has been developing a unique sculptural language where glass becomes a material for meditation and transformation.
His iconic series, notably the Ovolites, explore the relationship between fragility, permanence, light, and territory. The organic forms, often inspired by living things, seem suspended between mineral, plant, and human presence.
